PROSPECT TRACE

How do we convert an expressway into civic space?

A series of interventions along the Prospect Expressway respond to a call from the Institute for Public Architecture: Reconnecting Communities Across the BQE: Unraveling Moses’ Legacy. The expressway represents decades of effort and extraordinary investments of materials and labor. It is too valuable to destroy and too fascinating to bury. Instead, we propose to refashion the highway as ordinary city tissue.

  • how to restore multi-modal transportation patterns
  • how to enjoy and appreciate highway infrastructure
  • how to embrace flexible principles that adjust to varying site conditions
