How do we modify a landmark?
Inspired by Ebeneezer Howard’s dream of a garden city, Sunnyside Gardens was designed as an antidote to urban slums. A blend of townhomes and apartment buildings are clustered around courts that feature communal lawns, a symbol of prosperity. This experimental landscape must now confront new challenges – climate change and aging occupants:
- how to reconcile an original vision with contemporary needs
- how to accommodate flexible living arrangements
- how to create an accessible entrance in a historic setting
- how to add sustainable infrastructure to historic building
